Most food items are specified in typical serving sizes (example: 3 oz for steaks).  In addition, you can change the servings to be in grams, ounces, cup, tbsp, tsp, etc depending on the food item. When you change the serving size, the new nutritional values are calculated and shown. You can then save the food item as a favorite and the unit will remember the serving sizes that you specified.

How are exercise calories calculated?

The CalorieSmart unit has a built-in database of exercises. When you specify the time spent on an exercise, the calories are calculated based upon your body weight. You can also create custom exercises or input the calories (say, from a treadmill readout) directly into the unit.
